| Think the B10 is Huge? Well, Think
again.
While finishing the B10 model, several people wrote me to tell me
that it looked too small...or at least pieces of it looked to small
(like the bridge module) when compared to other Klingon ships. One
person pointed out Captains Log #6 had the dimensions of the B10 and
suggested i check it out.
Well, when I built my models I never built them to scale. I created
them in generic units of measurement and roughly sized them to what I
thought was right. The only exceptions to this practice were the Fed CA
and Klingon D7. I built them to the scale drawings of the AMT/ERTL model
diagrams. My eyeballing had worked fine in the past because none of my
art really had ships appearing side by side. So to make sure that the
B10 was a little more accurate, I decided to convert it's scale to
meters and scan the drawing in Captains Log #6 to get the proportions
right. Surprisingly I was very close. But what surprised me more was
what the B10 looked like compared to the D7 and the Fed CA! It was NOT
that big!
The B10 is listed in Captains Log #6 as 363 meters long. In the Star
Fleet technical manual (and other canon publications) the Fed CA is 289
meters (288.6), the Klingon D7 is 216 meters, and a Klingon G1 (Fast
Patrol ship/PF) 35-40 meters according to Module K. I based the size of
the C8 on the size of the Federation Dreadnought (320 meters), but now
that i think about it, it would probably be a few meters shorter.
Probably around 310/205 meters. I had to guess on the size of the F5. The one source file i found that was similar to the B10
reference didn't state any dimensions.
When stacked up side by side, the Klingon B10 is not really that big
at all. It looks like a C8 on mild steroids. To make things worse, It
looks even smaller when compared to the Excelsior Class Enterprise-B
which measures in at 467 meters!
Bummer.
